Be disciplined at the food store. If you don’t buy it, you won’t be tempted to eat it.

You’re hungry.

It’s time for a snack.

You open the fridge and search through the cabinets. You don’t see anything good, so you grab at that bag of chips, or opt for some ice cream. Then after the fact, you wonder why? What did I just do? You complain about it. And you might even feel bad a bout it. You didn’t really want that stuff. You KNEW you didn’t need that stuff, and yet again, you settled for a high-calorie, low-nutrition snack.

Why?

BECAUSE IT WAS THERE.

Even the most disciplined people find it hard to turn away calorie dense delicious treats when they are right in front of them. When it’s staring at you, when it captivates your senses, that’s when it’s hardest to ignore.

If you’ve ever gone to a Mexican restaurant, the kind where they bring out the complimentary tortilla chips to the table, you know what I’m talking about. Shit, you may not even like tortilla chips that much, but when they are right there in front of you, you may eat the whole f*cking basket…Same thing with bread at an Italian restaurant. It’s a trap!

If you’re watching your figure, or just looking for a healthier diet and lifestyle, and you’re concerned about making smart choices, I have five words for you. MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOURSELF.

The secret to smart decisions is to avoid situations where bad decisions will be an option. You have to avoid the traps.

Open you fridge or pantry. If there’s crap food in there, you’ve already set the trap for yourself. Of course you’re going to pull from that stuff when you’re hungry. You’re hungry and that’s what’s available. It’s that simple.

So….eliminate the trap. Don’t buy the stuff now that you would regret eating later. Be disciplined when you’re shopping—that’s where it all starts. It’s much easier to make rational choices in a supermarket on a full stomach, than when you’re starving and all you have to choose from is cheese puffs or pie.

And further than that, set yourself up to make some smart decisions. Buy snack food that’s healthy and nutritious. Fruit or veggies for example. Sub yogurt (without excessive sugar) or nuts for ice-pops and candy. Make it easy on yourself, and make your kitchen a “bad-decision free zone”.

I snack on veggies with some low-fat before bed. It’s delicious and is much better than cakes and cookies… etc. Anyone have any other tasty, yet healthy, ideas for before bed snacks?

  9. [...] Chips and Fries are great…in moderation. On a regular basis, opt for natural choices to cure your hunger. To make this easier on yourself, make the choice while you’re at the food store and not while you’re hungry (Be disciplined at the food store. If you don’t buy it you won’t be tempted to eat it).
