Three easy ways to control your waistline
March 23, 2011 6 CommentsIf it hasn’t been said already, let’s say it again. Your better-body image focus should not be about getting skinny, but rather about getting healthy. Looking and feeling great is a byproduct of being healthy, it doesn’t always work the other way around.
And, frankly, getting healthier is not rocket science (as diet and fad workouts will have you believe). Eat better, exercise (You will not get bulky in the gym), get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, laugh, make love, and challenge yourself every day…that’s the formula more or less.
But before you log off to put that formula into effect, consider these three super easy lifestyle moves that will help your cause:
1. Do not drink your calories.
Billions of marketing dollars have been spent convincing you that carbonated sugar water will make you happy, or give you energy, or even provide important vitamins. What these dollars have failed to reveal is that popular sodas, teas, juices, and sports and energy drinks are packed with calories. Having a few fancy beverages throughout your day can add as much as 1,000 calories to your daily intake. Alcohol and cream and sugar-laden coffee are no different.
So, the simple fix…Drink water, and water only. Get your nutrients and calories from food. Don’t like water? Try squeezing some citrus in for flavor (lemon, lime, orange). You might miss the cache of fancy drinks, but your wallet and waist will thank you.
2. Use fruit, vegetables, nuts, or yogurt as sides and snacks.
Chips and Fries are great…in moderation. On a regular basis, opt for natural choices to cure your hunger. To make this easier on yourself, make the choice while you’re at the food store and not while you’re hungry (Be disciplined at the food store. If you don’t buy it you won’t be tempted to eat it).
3. Eat Breakfast
This can’t be the first time you’re hearing this. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It jump-starts your metabolism and helps regulate your energy. Include time for breakfast into your morning routine and you’ll reap benefits all day long. Cereals (not Count Chocula), eggs, peanut butter and toast, and fruit are awesome and easy to prepare.
